Off The Shelf: March 14, 2014‏

A newsletter from the Prince William Public Library System

Today, March 14th, is Learn about Butterflies Day, thanks to the National Wildlife Federation.  It is a perfect time to raise awareness of these lovely creatures, as all of us are longing for signs of Spring and the summer to come.  While there is a great deal of information out on the internet about butterflies,  nothing beats having a book loaded with color photos when you are trying to identify the very butterfly you just saw.  Your mobile device may access a hundred random sites with partial information – but the field guides stocked by the library are far superior.  The same is true for trees, wildflowers, and birds, to name just a few.  Every library branch has nature guides, all lovingly researched and edited by people who are passionate about the subjects covered.
Along with thoughts of Spring, March brings a focus on all things Irish, and that makes many of us think of traveling to see it for ourselves.  As with nature guides, it is also good to remember that travel guides are another area where the good old-fashioned book can often offer you far superior resources in one compact format, as opposed to wandering the web.  For instance, if you  really only want to know if there is an Italian restaurant within 10 miles of Lisdoonvarna, Ireland, the web is indeed most efficient.  On the other hand, if you want some idea of what are the best and most interesting things to see and do near the charming town of Lisdoonvarna, you can’t beat a Fodors or Michelin guidebook.  Seasoned travelers with true expertise will help you plan your Irish adventure in a way that cannot be duplicated on the web.

There’s always something going on at every branch all month long, but it is especially pertinent to note that on March 18th at 10:30 a.m., the Chinn Park Library will celebrate The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day.  After all, we know where butterflies come from, right?

Check out the library’s Calendar of Events on our webpage for more fun March events for adults, teens and children.
