Off The Shelf: December 2, 2013‏

An e-mail newsletter from the Prince William Public Library System

These phrases are just some of the thousands of way to wish someone Merry Christmas in another language.  And what better month than this one to decide to learn a new language?  December is Learn a Foreign Language Month.  Luckily for you, the Library subscribes to a tool called Powerspeak Languages, and you have 24/7 access via our webpage to this powerful language learning tool – for free!  Using an interactive and immersive format, Powerspeak Languages is designed to foster cultural awareness as well as language fluency.  This source, which only requires you to enter your Prince William Public Library card number in order to use it, is ideal for those who need to learn a new language for travel or personal enrichment.  The most-studied foreign languages are included and there is also an English-as-a-Second-Language module for Spanish and Chinese speakers. If you prefer a more “old-school” approach to language learning, the library also stocks many language instruction audio CDs, as well as books of grammar, vocabulary and instruction.  Whatever way you chose to learn, there is a resource just for your needs.

With a brand new year right around the corner, have you made any resolutions?  If not, how about you try this one on for size--resolve to spend a few moments finding out how your library can serve your needs best.  For instance, are you trying to figure out how to begin tracing your family tree?  If so, the library’s RELIC service has a number of programs every month for genealogists, as well as personalized one-on-one appointments available for the public.  Or maybe your resolution is to spend less but read more.  That one has an easy fix -- make sure your library card is up to date and then come in and browse our new books, our displays and especially our Fortunate Finds.  Fortunate Finds are exactly what they sound like – bestsellers you are fortunate enough to find when you come to the library, as these are copies of the hottest books we provide specifically for readers browsing for a new book.  No one can place a hold on these copies.  You may even have resolved to learn how to use that ebook reader that was under the tree last holiday.  If so, we have free ebooks, and, as with our other services, all you need is a free library card.  Perhaps you have resolved to modernize your skill set, and if so, how about practicing downloading audiobooks using your iPod or MP3 player?  You can access free downloadable audio books from two different sources and all you need is – no surprise! – a current library card.  In addition to the few things mentioned here, there is so much more -- so resolve today to stop by and update or renew your library card and ask us for information about the world of resources that will be at your fingertips.
