Books to Look For
The Screaming Staircase (A Lockwood & Co. Mystery) by Jonathan Stroud            J FIC
From the author of the Bartimaeus Trilogy comes a new series perfect for a chilly October night.   England is overrun with the Visitors, ghostly, unfriendly spirits that haunt peoples’ homes. Psychic detection agencies have sprung up to help rid the country of them.  Because children and teens are better able to sense these ghosts than adults, the agencies employ them to confront and eradicate the beings.   When Lucy flees her country home for London, she applies to work for Anthony Lockwood, whose agency consists just of himself and one other person, the pokey, doughnut-loving George.  After a case goes terribly wrong, it looks like Lockwood & Co. is doomed to go out of business.  But possible salvation arrives in the form of a daunting job to rid a wealthy man’s country house of a pack of malevolent ghosts, ghosts who killed the last team sent to deal with them.  Can Lucy, George and Lockwood succeed where others have failed?  And more importantly, can they survive?  This exciting fantasy will have you turning pages--and turning on all the lights!
