It’s the Merry Month of May – and with May comes that fabulous day when mothers everywhere are celebrated.  This Mother’s Day, whether you are a son, daughter, sister, mother or grandmother, focus on some great Mom-centric reads.  You can’t go wrong with any of these:

“Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake” by Anna Quindlen – having lost her mother when she was just 40, Anna Quindlen muses about turning 60, expressing her gratitude that she has been allowed the life her mother did not have.  Thoughtful, insightful essays about life, loving, and (yes) motherhood.

“Then Again” by Diane Keaton – Diane Keaton knew she couldn’t write an autobiography without writing about her remarkable mother, Dorothy Hall.  Her mother struggled to find a role for herself, and recorded her thoughts in 85 journals through the years.  A fascinating study of two equally fascinating women.

“The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan – in fiction, Tan has painted a memorable portrait of four mothers and four daughters.  The mothers were Chinese immigrants, and this rich novel depicts their struggles and their triumphs.  Tan has admitted in interviews that her own mother was very much on her mind as she wrote.

“The End of Your Life Book Club” by Will Schwalbe – the true story of a mother-son bond strengthened as Schwalbe’s mother was dying of pancreatic cancer.  To pass the hours in waiting rooms and hospital beds, they began a book club, sharing their passion for reading with each other.  A moving and uplifting memoir.
