The Grateful List

One practice that helps me cope during difficult times is to make lists of things I am grateful for. The practice allows me to be "present" in an active way. I use "I" on purpose, not because I am the only one who appreciates things or because I presume to own them, but because it's a statement of what I personally am thankful for at this moment and others.

I started with five things this morning, my most immediate things. The ones to follow might be based more on second-hand thanks, that it, more of the specific things others do that make me happy and more memories.

I actually somewhat ripped off this idea from "Three Beautiful Things." I realized that what makes something even more beautiful is being grateful for it! And counting our blessings makes us joyful.

Feel free to add your own!

1. My beautiful children who are the joy in my life.
2. My beautiful David who holds God's Heart.
3. My mother whose love and hope have inspired me to keep fighting and believing.
4. My two brothers who have given me humor and opposing perspectives.
5. My in-laws who have given me extended, loving, healthy family.
6. My father's metaphysical imagination that has taught me to think beyond.
7. My dog's soft face and ears, the way she sleeps close to me, the way she prances and begs.
8. My cat, Cosmo, whose soft, sleek fur and purring presence has brought me hours of comfort.
9. My cat, Fiona, whose mischief and attitude, whose puffy chubbiness, and ear-scratching fondness has amused us all.
10. The way the animals are part of our family and provide us private jokes with years of joy.
11. That my children have become my friends and companions as well as my responsibility.
12. That I have had many opportunities to grow.
13. That I have had many lives through which I continue to evolve.
14. That I have had vision to see the beauty and colors all around me.
15. That I have learned to derive meaning from even the smallest things.
16. That I have experienced spirituality through a variety of belief systems.
17. That I have learned to appreciate the beauty of formal ritual.
18. That I have learned to take better care of my mental and physical health.
19. That I have had access to education through schools, colleges, teachers, my mother, and colleagues.
20. That I have had access to spiritual guidance through a diverse community.

Today's Grateful List:

1. My beautiful husband who understands me, loves me more than I thought I could ever be loved, and puts up with my oddness; his quirky sense of humor; the way his skin and face smell.

2. Watching squirrels and birds eat off my back deck.

3. Laughing at my children's ever-evolving sense of humor.

4. Loving what can be done with words.

5. The feel of the keyboard keys beneath my fingertips.

1. Yesterday, sitting in a stream of warm sun on my front stoop, listening to the kids laugh and whoop on the swings across the street.

2. An hour's worth of housework overdue and done.

3. A clean Shiba, fluffy and smelling of fresh fur. Nuzzling her face feels wonderful!

4. Visiting an old friend I thought I had lost. What a blessing!

2. Poetry and beautiful photos.

3. Good friends who love and understand you the week before your period!

Angie at http://iorganizeyou.blogspot.com/ reminded me about this list. I had forgotten about it.

Yesterday around the dinner table, we all said what we were thankful for. The overwhelming response was family, a home, pets, and food.

In this economy, food has become a commodity for some people. So are homes and even family. If we have these luxuries, we need to be sure to be thankful. And we need to help those who do not have these necessities in whatever ways you can.

I am thankful for my sis-in-law's birthday gift: "Healing Cards." Healing Cards are a box of wisdom from interfaith traditions meant to be read one a day.

Today's card stemming from Saint John of the Cross's "Dark Night of the Soul" :

"To be sure of the road, close your eyes and walk in the dark."

I am grateful for my long hike this morning, the longest one I have done in years.

I am grateful for two days at Skyline Drive, foliage in the mountains and family time.

I am grateful I can see the trees turn colors and smell the leaves. I am grateful I can hear birds and crickets.

I am grateful my dog is still in good enough health to enjoy walks with me.

I am grateful I can be grateful.

Since tomorrow is Thanksgiving, I thought I would add to this list.

I am thankful I have a family, a home, lovely pets and food to share.

I am thankful I have a computer and the drive to write.

I am thankful for the family next door who sometimes mow our lawn and take our trash can in when we get too busy or forget.

I am thankful for my children's teachers who have made such a positive difference in their lives.

I am thankful to people who have given me the opportunity to expand professionally and do things I love for a living!

I am thankful I can be thankful.

May we be grateful for a day of peace, love, joy and thanks and remember those who are not as fortunate as we are.

Someone stopped by here and reminded me about this practice that I've ignored. Now I feel guilty. So here is another installment:

1. I am grateful for the people who remind me what I am missing when I get too engrossed in work.

2. I am grateful my kids often sing when they get up in the morning.

3. I am grateful I am finally getting my lap-band surgery Monday after having to wait nearly a year.

I am grateful my husband gave me a nice, soft pink blanket for when I nap on the couch.

I am grateful my kids know how to laugh.
