The New Three Beautifuls

I've had to start another one of these because my last one, The Daily Three Beautifuls, was just taking so long to get into "edit" mode, and the coding kept coming up and being weird. And since I am not fluent in HTML, I thought, well, I will just start a new one and link to the old one. Anyway, here we appreciation of life....

September 14, 2007
1. My kitty licking her soft white paws with her triangle pink tongue. Then she spreads her toes to get in between the tender pink pads.
2. Sharing leftover chicken with my Inu on the couch. That bay window that lets in all the light.
3. My hubby's leftover mashed potatoes, even better when cold! Thank you, sweetie, for lunch!
September 12, 2007
1. My multi-pink-and-red birthday roses with dyed-to-match baby's breath. Happy Birthday to Me!!
2. A glorious day finally free of humidity and with just a tease of fall.
3. Old neighborhoods filled with gingerbread houses, widows walks, and front porches, veritable Easter baskets of colorful variety, style, and feel, hugged in by hundred year old trees.
September 4, 2007
1. Watching the kids board the school bus on the first day back to school. The Kindergartners look sooooo small next to my 3rd and 4th grade girls. We forget how little they used to look.
2. Holding an arm out of the open window of a car; letting wind pick it up and hold it; turning a hand into a shark's fin and asking the wind to turn it back.
3. Bike riding with the girls in the setting sun and cooling air. Watching how tall they get when they stand upright on the pedals, letting the bike glide on.

August 30, 2007
1. The community pool, filled to the max, glassy and inviting and almost empty.
2. A thin little man, face touched by decades of sun...he wears a straw cowboy hat and plaid shirt, pushes an ice cream cart alongside the busy road.
3. On the sidewalk, an elderly woman in a wheelchair leans over the side to feed an attentive squirrel.
August 29, 2997

1. My eldest daughter, 10, coming down in a floral blue skirt, light blue, lacy tank, flip-flops and toenails painted metallic blue. She is so beautiful!

2. My younger daughter's giggle. The way she threw me into a giggle fit in the car yesterday.

3. Looking around upstairs and seeing all three pets lounging....the black cat, the "cow cat" and the Shiba Inu.

August 27, 2007

1. Brainstorming with a creative, diverse group.

2. Laughing at my kids' wit and wry humor. Where EVER did they acquire it??

3. Every time I look at them, loving how beautiful and growing my girls are.

August 25, 2007

Wow! Has it really been this long since I've checked in here? I need to get back to this practice.

1. When the kids are away, the parents will play!

2. Saturday morning coffee and chat with my hubby. Finally, some quiet time to talk!

3. Rejoicing in what we CAN do instead of fretting about what we CAN'T do.

August 12, 2007

1. Everyone and five children at the beach to celebrate Daddy's 40th birthday.

2. Kayaking with my brother, the Blue Heron, Egret, Osprey, and Eagle.

3. Swimming with the Swans.

August 5, 2007

1. An afternoon nap with the ultra-soft, pink blankie my husband bought me.

2. He just about finished tiling the spare room. Looks like a room again! Yippee!!

3. The girls loafing in front of the television on a giant stuffed pillow I sewed for them. They are watching a black and white version of "Roman Holiday."

July 27, 2007

1. "A loaf of bread. A container of milk. A stick of butter. I remembered! I remembered!" (A wonderful metaphor courtesy of an ancient Sesame Street segment.)

2. Overcoming amnesia.

3. My mother, nurturer of strength and conscience.

July 25, 2007

1. Biking around our little neighborhood loop with my older daughter who is starting to look so mature!

2. The new traffic lights at the intersection near the school. YEAH!!! Thank you!!!

3. Wondering what will come next.

July 19, 2007

1. Humid morning breezes that somehow don't feel hot.

2. "Go now. Fulfill your destiny. Be who you were meant to become." (LOTR)

3. "Whatever comes through that door, you will stand." (LOTR)

July 12, 2007

1. Morning rituals that come complete with coffee.

2. Alliteration always amusing me.

3. Fits of fancy in the forest of my mind.

July 7, 2007

1. Without a doubt, my Shiba Inu.

2. The porch swing (before it broke on our last day) on our camp cabin. The rangers came to fix it.

3. My favorite things about Bull Run Regional Park: water, trails, trees and birds.

June 29, 2007

1. Finally deleting all those old emails that I no longer need or care to need.

2. Enjoying my annual summer tan and wishing it would stay all year.

3. Salted pumpkin seeds, shell and all.

June 24, 2007

1. Seeing Phantom of the Opera at the Kennedy first viewing at a big theater.

2. "The Music of the Night" in that tear-your-heart-out tone.

3. Finding a new writer's group I can meet with more often.

June 22, 2007

1. Staying oh-so-busy with the kids at just the start of the summer: swimming, biking, crafting, working together. Oh, and bickering. Can't forget that.

2. Planning a day of community service alongside the kids. Nothing like early inculcation of social responsibility.

3. That stiff feeling you get in the morning after swimming the day before. It's a nice kind of sore.

June 17, 2007

1. Spending Father's Day with two fathers whom I adore.

2. High tide, the kayak, evening sun and the breeze against my skin.

3. My husband tutoring the children on what it means to tease without being hurtful.

June 14, 2007

1. Standing on my porch in a cool summer rain.

2. Getting ready for my daughter's awards ceremony and the last day of school.

3. Preparing a list of things we plan to do over the summer.

June 11, 2007

1. My morning phone call from my best friend.

2. Watching Fiona, our cat, hovering near the open slider. She sniffs the warm air.

3. A family painting session in which I demand everyone, "Paint what is in your soul."

June 9, 2007

1. My kitchen filled with pink and yellow roses from my husband.

2. Our candlelight dinner in the actual dining room with the crystal champagne glasses, our best "china" and antique flatware handed down from generations of his family.

3. Huge vats--no, cauldrons--of chicken vegetable soup that really tasted okay! Lots of left overs to freeze for weeks. It's amazing how much you can do with less than $15.00 in fresh food and some guesswork.

June 8, 2007

1. Once again, finding my lost artistic soul.

2. An eclectic cafe with excellent coffee, friendly and open gay guys, big old couches, and lots of art on the walls. Is there anything better?

3. Walking with my creative friend and ogling a neighborhood of old houses and giant trees.

May 31, 2007

1. The baby squirrel poking his head out of narrow opening of the gallon seed container on my porch. He had climbed right in!

2. Start of the pool season, and the girls passing their swim test.

3. Moving on to bigger and better projects.

May 27, 2007 Memorial Day

1. Sharing Placid Bay
Osprey, Eagle and Egret
my yellow kayak.

*kayak is not actually mine, but I wanted to keep the syllabic integrity of the Haiku.
2. Remembering those who serve, those we love, and what we are thankful for.

3. Serenity of early morning water.

May 25, 2007

1. My morning porch ritual of feeding seed to the birds and squirrels, drinking coffee, and waiting with my Shiba Inu to see the girls' school bus peeking through the now full trees. The bus passes, and I wave....

2. The way my husband laughs at my silly little jokes. Today he seemed to derive great pleasure out of my redundant "foot" joke: my right foot swells whenever I eat MSG, and yesterday, I ate lots of fat free Pringles. My shoes don't fit today.

3. The freedom that working from home can give you when you really just need to sit here and blog in your bare feet. (Actually, being contract, I am somewhat unemployed at the moment, but since it's Memorial Day weekend, might as well celebrate the situation.)

Update, May 27, 2012: The concept of noting three beautiful things has morphed into "The Grateful List," since I am grateful for all the beauty life offers me.  There is a fine line between joy, beauty and thankfulness.  When we are grateful, we acknowledge all the good things in life and praise their origins.
